The History

What we now describe as the Small Hall, was built in 1866 as a schoolroom for the children of navvies involved in the construction of the Bradway Railway Tunnel which is immediately below the Hall. The Surrey Street Circuit of the United Free Methodist Church used the schoolroom for worship from 1867 and were tenants of Bradway Chapel between 1869 and about 1886, also using the building as a denominational day school. St James the Great Norton, a parish which at that time covered part of Bradway, took over the tenancy of Bradway Mission Room in 1886/7.

The construction during 1951 of Bradway Church Hall was a joint venture between Norton Parish and Bradway residents with the latter providing the lion’s share of the input. Most of the work was carried out by local tradesmen on a pro bono basis. The new Hall was formally opened on 26 January 1952. The kitchen was added in 1965-6. Between 1952 and 2000 the Hall was managed by a committee containing four or five people representing the Church (from 1955 St Peter’s Greenhill) and four or five representing Bradway residents. A new constitution was adopted at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 19 May 2000 and we became registered charity no 1093591 on 29 August 2002.

The Main Hall was refurbished in 2009 and the Small Hall in 2013. Since then we have made a series of significant improvements to our buildings and facilities.
